Makeover Monday — Women in Power
So this week I discovered Makeover Monday, which was just the dose of inspiration, direction, and motivation I needed to slither out of my lockdown burrow and make something cool.
I puzzled for a while over how best to display this dataset. There were so many angles to take on the story — highest proportion of female representation; rate of change in the last ten years; the range within the decade for each country. Initially, I wanted to make a Gantt chart to show the increase in female representation between 2009 and 2019 (this date range was a compromise since the dataset was incomplete, and I had to omit a few countries). However, I soon realised that doing this would omit an important part of the story by failing to display the year that representation rates had risen higher during the intervening years than they were in 2019.
After some trial and error, I sketched up this comet format, which depicts all the data points whilst highlighting the absolute change over the decade. I used RAWGraphs to quickly create a beeswarm chart which I then dumped into Illustrator for styling. Evidently the final product was heavily influenced by the Tron soundtrack which I happened to have on for most of the afternoon. No regrets.
